Latin Jazz vom Feinsten bringt der dritte Abend der LBBW jazzopen Stuttgart 99. Wer im Vorjahr die Veranstaltung mit den Afro Cuban Allstars und mit der Gruppe Los Van Van miterlebt hat, weiß welche Faszination von der Verschmelzung afrikanischer Musiktradition mit südamerikanischen Rhythmen ausgehen kann. Zu "Jazz en Clave" , einem Septett, das der Pianist Jesus "Chucho" Valdéz zusammengestellt hat , gehören mit Giovanni Hidalgo, Claudio Roditi und Juan Pablo Torres Musiker, die zusammen mit Michel Camilo zu den derzeit besten Latin Jazzern der Welt gezählt werden."Bellita y Jazztumbata" mit der Pianistin Lilia Exposito Pino, genannt Bellita, und ihrem Partner Miguel Miranda Lopez sind in Europa noch nicht so bekannt, aber auch sie laufen bei ihren Auftritten immer Gefahr, das Publikum mit ihrer Mischung aus traditionellen Jazz-Elementen, explosiven Rhythmen und atemberaubenden Sound in mittelschwere Zuckungen zu versetzen. "Jazz en Clave" ist ein Septett, das von Chucho Valdez eigens für LBBW jazzopen Stuttgart 99 zusammengestellt wurde. "Dieser Mann spielt seine Zuhörer um den Verstand", schwärmte ein Kritiker über den Pianisten Valdez, der sich für den Auftritt in Stuttgart Musiker eingeladen hat, die ihm dabei sicher behilflich sind. Gespannt sein darf man auf sein Zusammentreffen mit Michel Camilo, einem anderen Ausnahmepianisten, dessen technisch brillantes Spiel von Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson und McCoy Tyner beeinflußt ist. Zum Septett gehören: der Startrompeter Claudio Roditi,der Jazz und brasilianischen Rhythmus verbindet, den Samba liebt und sein Publikum – ganz gleich, was er spielt – mit dem warmen, unverwechselbaren Ton seiner Trompete verzaubert; der Percussion-Virtuose Giovanni Hidalgo, der schon mit Dizzy Gillespie, "King" Tito Puente, Art Blakey und Carlos Santana tourte; Juan Pablo Torres, der mit seinem schwierigen Instrument die kompliziertesten Rhythmen und Harmonien meistert und deshalb als der beste Trombonist des Latin Jazz gefeiert wird. Der Bassist Frank Rubio, der Percussionist Roberto Vizcaino und der Schlagzeuger Raul Pineda sind den Liebhabern südamerikanisch beeinflußter Jazzmusik genauso ein Begriff wie Mayra Valdéz, Chuchos Schwester, die mit ihm schon bei der legendären kubanischen Gruppe "Irakere" als Sängerin und Percussionistin dabei war. Wenn Lilia Exposito Pino, genannt Bellita, singt oder das Piano zum klingen bringt, ist ihre kubanische Herkunft unüberhörbar. Zusammen mit ihrem Partner Miguel Miranda Lopez verbindet sie traditionelle und moderne Musikstile der Karibikinsel mit Jazzelementen, aber auch mit brasilianischen Zutaten wie Bossa Nova. Sie mixt sie zu einem Cocktail voller aberwitziger Rhythmen und mitreißendem Scatgesang, der dank ihrer sonoren Stimme jedem unter die Haut geht. Bei Bellitas virtuosem wie technisch brillantem Klavierspiel glaubt man Anklänge an Pat Matheny und Chick Corea zu hören, andererseits ist sie stark beeinflußt von Migdalia Pino, ihrer Mutter, die in den 60er und 70er Jahren in Cabarets sang, und von ihrem Vater, der als Bassist in einem kubanischen Tanzorchester spielte. Das Spiel des Bassisten Miguel Miranda Lopez wird häufig mit dem des legendären Jaco Pastorius verglichen. Er gehört seit Jahren zu den gefragtesten Musikern der Karibik-Insel, genauso wie der Percussionist Alexander Napoles, der Bellita und Miranda in Stuttgart begleitet. Interessant dürfte an diesemAbend aber auch das Aufeinandertreffen zweier ganz unterschiedlicher Welten sein. Denn mit auf der Bühne stehen drei Stuttgarter Jazzer und Cuba-Fans: der Violinist Gregor Hübner, der Saxophonist Andreas Maile und der Gitarrist Helmut Sauer.

Following a highly successful small-group jazz concert at New York Town Hall on May 17, 1947, Armstrong's manager Joe Glaser dissolved the Armstrong big band on August 13, 1947 and established a six-piece small group. This group was called the All Stars, and in 1964 Louis Armstrong recorded his biggest-selling record, Hello, Dolly! He made assorted televison appearances, especially in the 1950s and 1960s – the recorded film was a TV Show in Australia when Armstrong was at the peak of his career. Armstrong kept up his busy tour schedule until a few years before his death in 1971. He also toured Africa, Europe, and Asia under sponsorship of the US State Department with great success, earning the nickname “Ambassador Satch”.

Robin Ticciati and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin recorded a programme that “struggles with the devil”: At the Haus des Rundfunks Berlin the orchestra performes Martinů's one-act opera “Slzy Nože” (‘The Tears of the Knife’) as well as Ondrej Adámek's “Sinuous Voices”. Martinů's satirical comedy, in which erotic desire and Satan both play a significant role, features a top-class cast including soprano Kateřina Kněžíková, contralto Markéta Cukrová and baritone Lucia Lucas. Together with Paul Hindemiths “Sancta Susanna”, recorded in April 2012 and conducted by renowned Hans Graf, both recordings form the programme “Struggle with the Devil”- which can now be seen on the screen. The video installations are designed by Ergo Phizmiz, one of the most productive artists in the world. EP is impossible to box into one particular genre of art. His work is beautiful, bewitching, bewildering and at times terrifying. Over the past decade he has created a body of work of hundreds of hours across theatre, song writing, text, electronic music, collage exhibitions, installations, opera, video, and radio plays that has constantly defied categorisation and been performed or broadcast all over the world.

*13:00 Horário Brasília This wonderful and exciting Cello Concerto is a beautiful translation of what the Brazilian composer, Claudio Santoro (1919-1989), was experiencing during his life when he composed it. It was written in 1961 while he was living away from his children in Berlin during the construction of the Berlin Wall. Santoro also incorporated Brazilian rhythms like bossa nova, forró and a jazzistic vibe into the very intense set of emotions he was feeling during that time in this piece. I.
